The sixth annual 'Donuts Are Forever' celebration for the late Jay Dee/J Dilla is going down on Sunday, February 19, 2012. 'Donuts Are Forever 6' is taking place in New York City at Brooklyn Bowl, with doors opening at 6pm and the show set to start at 8pm and tickets ranging from $5 to $10.
James "J Dilla/Jay Dee" Yancey passed away from complications of lupus on February 10, 2006 and the first 'Donuts Are Forever' party was held a year later. "We never went into this planning for it to be an annual series," Derreck "Dee Phunk" Johnson, a partner in Rare Form, the event's organizer. "The original DAF in 2007 was a commemoration of the first anniversary of his passing. But when we witnessed the turnout, we were dumbfounded. We were fans and we knew there were a ton of other fans out there...but just seeing the physical manifestation of that love blew us away. And five years later...here we are on number six."

Donuts Are Forever 6 will be hosted by Hip-Hop group Tanya Morgan, and feature Dilla's music being spun by an assortment of DJ's including Parler, Brina Payne, Ill Digitz and Getlive! Special guests include DJ Neil Armstrong and legendary Hip-Hop producer Prince Paul. Add the yearly attendees and curious newcomers to the mix and it should be great event that bigs up a Hip-Hop legend who didn't get his just due until he was gone.

"[Dilla] was taken from us way too soon," says Dee Phunk. "Dilla hadn't even reached his peak yet. He was destined for greatness. Yet he left a staggering amount of music behind for us to absorb. We feel Donuts Are Forever is a great way to keep his legacy and music alive. If just one person who is unfamiliar with his work walks into the party and leaves wanting to educate themselves further, then we've done our job. Plus just hearing that body of work in a large venue with professional sound and other like-minded individuals around the share it with...it's just a surreal experience."

A world traveler of Senegalese ancestry, vocalist/producer Zakee is currently based in Philadelphia. He launched his 2011 debut album Assimilations from that perch but it sounds like it could have come from anywhere, and, in some ways, it’s coming from a lot of places.

Assimilations starts out with “The Dark Crystal,” a downtempo electronic track featuring the vocals of The Very Best’s Essau Mwamweya and the spoken words of the late Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes. It’s clear this artist has thoroughly assimilated a lot of influences in his time on Earth.

Hip hop beats often morph into complex polyrhythms in his compositions, but it all stays within the realm of pop and, while TV on The Radio and Maximum Balloon are close musical cousins, Zakee is definitely staking out his own left-of-center territory somewhere between chillwave and Afropop.

The Renaissance man played most of the instruments his album and deftly produced most of it –in addition to rapping and crooning like a streetwise Tunde Adebimpe. The former high school math teacher is a painter too, and his appreciation for the visual world shows in imaginative videos like the one for “Glory,” shot in Rio de Janeiro.

Zakee started out messing with kuduro and remixing M.I.A and he can still throw out some dirty, git-er-done dance tracks — in case you thought he was just some art school guy — so make sure you get those bonus tracks.

DAKAR, Senegal — Senegal's opposition called on the population Saturday to rise up against President Abdoulaye Wade's decision to run for a third term, a move that foreshadows more unrest after a night of clashes that saw a policeman stoned to death in the normally peaceful nation on Africa's west coast.

The streets of the capital were strewn with debris, sign of the riots that spread from a downtown square to the interior of the country late Friday after the country's constitutional court approved Wade's candidacy in next month's election.

The constitution was changed soon after the 85-year-old Wade took office in 2000 in order to impose a two-term limit. He argues that because the law was not in effect when he was elected, it should not apply to him.

In a statement Saturday, the M23 coalition representing all the major opposition candidates running in the election said the court had betrayed the people.

"A black page has been written in the history of our country by the decision to validate the candidacy of Abdoulaye Wade," the statement said. "We are inviting the population to organize and mobilize themselves to face Wade. The combat has started."

Opposition candidate Macky Sall, a former prime minister under Wade who is now running to unseat him, said they had given "the order" for people to take to the streets. He denied that future protests could turn violent.

Police spokesman Col. Alioune Ndiaye said a policeman had been killed late Friday during the riots that followed the court's verdict. A graphic video posted on YouTube shows a body lying on the ground, a cinderblock lying near his head, as a group of young men hurl more rocks.

"I can confirm that one policeman was killed," Ndiaye said. "He was attacked and he was hit in the head by a brick. He was stoned to death," he said.

Senegal finds itself at a crossroads before the Feb. 26 election. The dispute over the legality of Wade's candidacy is compounded by the worsening economic situation, including spiraling prices and grinding unemployment.

Wade has alienated many former allies as well as the population by giving an increasing share of power to his unpopular son. Corruption scandals have erupted at regular intervals, detracting from the government's achievements which include the building of numerous roads and bridges.

In 2008, an audit of the Ministry of the Family discovered that officials there had billed the government for coffee spoons costing $74 a piece. The entire cutlery set cost Senegal nearly $30,000.

Protesters staged a large anti-government rally in Senegal's capital Saturday just hours after the government said it had arrested several suspects accused of planning a coup d'etat.

Several dozen riot police stood watch over Dakar's main square as groups of mostly young men shouted and chanted their grievances against the government of President Wade.

The protest, organized by Senegalese media tycoon Sidy Lamine Niasse, marked the 11th anniversary since President Abdoulaye Wade ascended to the presidency.

Just hours before the rally, the justice minister appeared on state television saying security forces had foiled a coup plot targeting different locations in the capital and jailed several suspects.

Opposition figures denounced the arrests and many protesters called the allegations preposterous.

A taxi driver observing the protests named Mamadou says he does not believe there was any plot. He says a coup is either lead by a powerful politician or the military, but that the opposition in Senegal is far too weak for that.

Senegal prides itself as one of the most stable democratic countries in West Africa, but rising food prices, high unemployment and daily power outages in Dakar have frustrated and angered many former supporters of the president.

Some are also uneasy over President Wade's decision to stand for a third term in elections next year, when he will be 85, as well as his handing over of several important government posts to his son, Karim Wade.

Protester Mamsher Ibrahima Fall, a fisherman who works at the city's port, said he came to the rally because he is tired of rising food prices and the lack of jobs for young people. “We cannot work, we don't have nothing to do anymore, and the government is not good here. He doesn't give no work, he's just building streets. The people [are] hungry. We want another president. We don't need this president," he said.

Like many others in attendance, Fall voted for Wade 11 years ago but now thinks it is time for a change of leadership.

A retired civil service employee named Amadou Diaw agreed. Diaw says there was a lot of hope and trust when Wade came to power in 2000, but now people feel there has been a total deception.

Diaw now supports human rights activist and professor, Amsatou Sow Sidibe, who has already declared her candidacy against Wade for 2012. He says it's not because he's a feminist, but in his opinion, after three regimes lead by men, it is high time for a woman.

The United Nations and embassies sent out warnings to foreign nationals to avoid the protests in Dakar, though the rally remained relatively peaceful.

Although some government critics sought to link the protest with those in Arab countries, protester Serigne Malick said Senegal does not need a revolution. He says it would be useless for there to be a revolution like the ones in Egypt, Tunisia or Libya. The people are only asking the government to work better, work together with the people and be held more accountable.

Malick said he was impressed by the turnout, by some estimates as many as 3,000, though at times there appeared to be more onlookers than participants.

Later in the day, some protesters migrated to Place de l'Obelisque for another demonstration organized by opposition groups, artists and students.
